Through Mosman and Neutral Bay the exposure is harbour rather than ocean, and through Ashfield and Marrickville it is largely sheltered — yet the 1960s to 1980s unit blocks in both areas show the same balcony spalling. Where it is present and has been wet, it is associated with corrosion in the slab beneath it. Whether it is the cause in a particular building is what the inspection establishes; the era on its own does not settle it.

In the Inner West the additional early consideration is often the narrow rear lanes and shared boundaries of the terrace-and-unit mix, which affects how access is arranged rather than whether approval is required.
